Beach Energy – Otway Phase 5 Flowline Replacement Project – Supply of Rock Dumping Bags

Project Overview

The Thylacine Field, located approximately 70 km south of Port Campbell, Victoria, in the Bass Strait, is undergoing expansion to support additional production. As part of this effort:

  • Four additional wells have been drilled and completed.
  • New subsea infrastructure, including pipelines, umbilicals, and manifolds, has been installed.
  • The existing out-of-service flowline must be recovered and disposed of.

Subsea 7, our client, engaged us to manage the provision of Rock Bags, including:

  • Engineering, manufacturing, inspection, and testing.
  • Handling and installation equipment.
  • Rock Bags featuring an ROV-activated bottom-opening mechanism for controlled release.
  • Temporary use Rock Bags, designed to be recovered post-installation.

Challenges

  • High Safety Standards: The client required a minimum safety factor of 10.
  • Load Capacity: Bags needed to be rated at SWL 2 tonnes.
  • Material Specifications: Rock fill had to be minimum 20mm diameter with a specific density to meet project requirements.

Solution Delivered

Oceanic Supply successfully provided 1-tonne Full Drop Bottom Bulka Bags, specifically designed for the project.

  • The bags featured cuttable handles to release the bottom flap efficiently.
  • We ensured the bags were pre-filled with rocks meeting the required specifications for seamless deployment.

By delivering a custom-engineered solution, we met the client's technical and operational requirements, ensuring safe and efficient rock dumping operations.
