Woodside Griffin Field decommissioning – Subsea Camera for 48-Hour Life Recording

Project Overview

The Griffin Field decommissioning is an ongoing project led by Woodside, involving the recovery of abandoned flexible flowlines and risers from the seabed to the vessel deck. These lines are then cut into smaller sections for storage in flat racks before being transported onshore for further processing and recycling.

During the recovery of one flexible line onboard the main construction vessel, an incident occurred where a significant amount of gas and water was released from the pipe. This raised concerns about the effectiveness of the previously performed flushing activities, as only limited records were available.

To safely resume the flexibles recovery process, additional flushing activities were proposed for all remaining flexible sections on the seabed. The objective was to flush out any potential residual gas using seawater. A remotely operated subsea camera was required at the discharge end of the pipe to record and capture any gas bubbles being flushed out.

Technip FMC, our client, invited us to provide a bespoke subsea camera system tailored to project requirements, including recording footage of the second end during the flushing activities.

Challenges Faced

• Tight Deadline: The system needed to be delivered and deployed quickly.
• 48 Hours of Continuous Recording: The camera had to operate non-stop for two days.
• Logistics: Transporting the system to the offshore site within the project timeline.

Solution Delivered

Oceanic Supply proposed a technical solution that met all project requirements. Our system was technically approved, but we ultimately lost out due to delays caused by:

• The long lead time required for battery procurement.
• Late response from the project team, affecting final delivery scheduling.

Despite these challenges, our technically viable solution demonstrated our capability to deliver high-quality, project-specific subsea camera systems for offshore operations.
